About Us

Dr Sarah Jane GibbonDr Sarah Jane Gibbon is a native Orcadian who is passionate about Orkney and its heritage.

She has spent fifteen years researching aspects of Orkney's heritage and it's wider Scandinavian and British contexts. She is a published author in the fields of archaeology and history.

Dr Gibbon worked in the tourism industry in Orkney, the Orkney Museum and the Orkney Library and Archive and is experienced in historical, genealogical, archaeological and topographical research.

Dr Gibbon has taught for the Departments of Archaeology and Cultural Studies at Orkney College, Aberdeen University, Glasgow University and Bristol University.

Dr Gibbon has organised conferences and delivered seminars, workshops and specialist guided tours to a range of audiences including professionals, academics, adult learners, school groups, tourists and community groups.

She has assisted with research in Orkney place-names, sagas, music, history and archaeology and featured as a local expert in a number of television and radio productions.

Dr Gibbon is an expert in historic Orkney landscape studies with particular interest in the medieval and later rural landscapes and has excavated medieval church and cemetery sites in Orkney.

An experienced singer of traditional songs of Orkney and Scotland, Dr Gibbon can facilitate singing workshops, has performed in a wide variety of venues, assisted with the organisation of the Orkney Folk Festival and taken part in local radio productions.
